Clinic Set Up - Safety Lab

The safety lab setup sometimes includes an area for staff to perform sample collections, and may also include an in-house laboratory depending on the site. The safety lab setup should, at a minimum, have space available for users to create lab orders and prepare samples for receipt by the safety lab.

Work Area and Equipment

The following recommendation is for creating orders and preparing samples to be received by the safety lab. If necessary, the work area and equipment used for safety lab orders can be used for other study activities without interfering with workflows.

Equipment for sample collections and in house laboratory testing is not included in this setup overview. For further details on equipment recommendations see specific articles for labels, label printers and barcode scanners at their respective entries within the Clinic Setup > Equipment page.

Screening

Typically there is a standard printer in the screening area, to maximize on equipment usage it is often setup so that the printer used for informed consents is also used to print lab orders. Additionally, the height/weight/BMI station or blood draw station could be used to complete tasks related to ordering labs. A completely separate workstation for this task can be setup if desired or depending on the clinic setup.
